Ilhabela's coastal waters offer diving on rocky reefs, pinnacles and several historic wrecks. There are no kelp forests and extensive tropical coral reefs are absent; hard coral growth is limited to small colonies. Currents are variable — some sites experience moderate to strong currents suitable for intermediate to advanced divers. Typical visibility is 5–20 metres. Expect sea turtles, rays, moray eels and diverse reef fishes such as snappers, groupers and parrotfish.

Ilhabela is an archipelago off the coast of São Paulo state, Brazil, where lush Atlantic Forest meets a rugged rocky coastline. The island's marine environment is characterised by rocky reefs, pinnacles and several shipwrecks popular with divers rather than extensive coral or kelp forests. Indigenous peoples inhabited the area prior to European colonisation, and the island later attracted sailors and occasional pirates. Protected parks conserve much of the terrestrial and marine biodiversity, and visitors come for hiking, beaches, waterfalls, snorkeling and recreational diving on wrecks and rocky reefs.
