Batticaloa is a lagoon town midway along Sri Lanka's east coast, about 100 km south of Trincomalee. The sea off the town is shallow and sandy near shore but has rocky and coral reefs a few kilometres out, and the famous wreck of the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes lies further offshore in deep water. Diving here is seasonal — the east coast is calm from April to October when the west is rough — and is run by a small number of local operators.
